Darts: Why hit a double when a single is easier to hit?

Big Hair S asked:

When I’m watching darts on espn I notice when they have like 16 points left they’ll go for a double 8… and if they hit a single 8 they’ll go for a double 4 to win… why not just go for the 16? or the 8?

You have to double-out to win.

AKA, you need to hit a double 8 if you have 16 points left.
