Should I Buy a Stun Gun or a Taser Gun? What are the Differences?

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Theresa M. Troolines asked:

When it comes to your personal safety you need to make sure that you are prepared to ward off

attackers who wish to do you harm. It doesn’t matter if you are a man or a woman; it’s smart to have a plan in place if someone decides to harm you. For this reason it is advised to research different means of protection. Everyone is different and tends to have a different preference on what type of defense weapon they wish to use.

For those who don’t wish to carry around a gun but want a little more protection than pepper spray can offer, might want look into the possibility or purchasing a stun gun or a taser gun.

Although similar in many aspects, a stun gun and a taser gun are not the same thing. A stun gun is a weapon that allows you to disable your attacker by giving them a short non-lethal high voltage electric shock. When you use a stun gun on someone you are basically giving them a charge of electricity that won’t cause permanent damage, but will allow you a few minutes to get away. The charge confuses the attacker’s nervous system and causes movement and thought to be quite difficult for a short amount of time.

Most stun guns can be held in your hand and receive their power from a 9 volt battery. What’s nice is that the charge is strong enough to pass through heavy clothing, but there is no transference to you if the attacker should touch you while you deliver a charge. The one downfall to a stun gun is that you have to be within reach of your attacker in order to deliver the charge.

A taser gun uses much of the same technology as a standard stun gun. The attacker is stunned with

the same charge and reacts much the same way as with a stun gun. The main difference is that unlike a stun gun, you don’t have to be right next to the attacker to deliver the charge. The stun guns charge electrodes are within the unit itself. With the taser gun, they are connected by wires. This is so that when you pull the trigger on the taser gun it is propelled towards the attacker much like a gun. With the help of small barbs, the wires latch onto the attacker and sends the shock the same way as a stun gun.

The advantage of a taser gun is that you don’t have to be right next to the attacker, you can be within a 15 foot distance to shoot your attacker. Another advantage the taser has over the stun gun is that the taser also functions as a contact stun gun if you do not wish to deploy the ‘darts’

Stun Gun Devices

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Fabiola Castillo asked:

Stun guns are an increasingly popular self defense tool especially among women. Stun guns are not lethal like firearms and not lacerative like knives. These stun guns have the ability to put down an attacker with a simple push of a button. It is the voltage in stun guns that can put down an attacker.

What is a stun gun?

Traditionally, a stun gun is a handheld device that has a trigger and two metal prongs at the end of the unit. One must make contact with the perpetrator by placing the two metal prongs of the stun gun anywhere on his body and pulling the trigger. The stun gun is operated by a power source provided usually by a 9 V battery.

How does a stun gun work?

An electric shock will be delivered to the attacker’s muscles thus causing severe muscular contractions that will produce lactic acid. Lactic acid is a byproduct produced by the muscles when a muscle is being overworked from the effects of the stun gun. Lactic acid will result when fatiguing a muscle that is exposed to repeated electric shock from a stun gun.

Furthermore, the electric shock from the stun gun will interrupt the attacker’s nervous system and minimize communication from the brain to the peripheral nerves. This interruption in “nerve flow” as well as the electrifying effects of the stun gun will temporarily incapacitate a potential attacker who is out to get you.

What are other types of stun guns?

There is a law enforcement edition of a stun gun called the Taser. Most popular among law enforcement personnel is the M-18 Taser stun gun. A Taser stun gun contains two metal darts that are connected to fine, threadlike wiring. Once a Taser stun gun is fired upon a perpetrator, the two darts stick to the person’s body. The handheld unit of the Taser stun gun contains the trigger that, once pulled, will send an electric shock through the wiring, through the darts, and into the person. The ultimate result will be that the perpetrator will fall to the ground in agonizing pain.

This particular stun gun is very effective in short range (up to 15 feet) confrontations without the user having to come into physical contact with the perpetrator.

Stun batons are another kind of stun gun device. Stun batons are a fan favorite among security guards. With their extended reach, one can maintain a distance between himself and the perpetrator. These stun batons have two metal strips on each side of the baton. If the perpetrator attempts to grab the baton, he will be electrified. Our stun batons come in two flavors, 300,000 V and 500,000 V, and measure 16″ in length.

Telescopic Stun Baton by Stun Master. This particular item measures 13″ closed, 21.5″ open, and puts out a whopping 800,000 V. It also contains a personal alarm and flashlight for night time use. This item makes an excellent, concealable tool for your utility belt. Unlike the aforementioned stun baton, the Telescopic Stun Baton contains metal around the entire shaft of the baton and not just two strips of metal.

Stop Crime Against Senior Citizens: Should Grandma Get a Taser

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

Derek Wray asked:

Though crime against senior citizens has decreased according to the Department of Justice, it still exists. Most crimes against senior citizens involve theft. Such as purse snatching or home burglary. The truth of the matter is senior citizens are easy targets. They are usually unable to defend themselves, react slower, unable to identify assailants due to poor vision, and may be confined to a wheelchair, this is sad and very unfortunate; nevertheless, very true.

Self defense classes are not very practical for senior citizens due to health concerns and the lack of physical strength to defend themselves; however, there are numerous lethal and non-lethal weapons available to senior citizens for the use of self defense. For example: taser guns.

Self defense instructors and law official alike agree that the Taser C2 model stun gun is a highly effective instrument for self defense. The Taser C2 is a non-lethal type of device that will not leave any permanent damage.

The Taser C2 is small, light weight and easy to carry. Yet, this does not affect its performance; which allows senior citizens the ability to carry the weapon without any restraints or inconvenience. This weapon works by the shooting of two probes at its target. The darts are connected to the unit by wires which can reach up to 15 feet. This allows the victim to defend themselves and taser their assailant from a distance; avoiding contact and immediate risk of harm.

The darts deliver an electric shock that interferes with the body’s nervous system, incapicitating the attacker and preventing their ability to move or further attack. Neither the person’s size nor their level of intoxification matters. The Taser C2 works by creating a physical reaction and not by pain compliance. The person being tasered cannot move their muscles.

So what if the darts miss the attacker? Though the Taser C2 has a built in laser to aid in successfully hitting your target, in case you miss, the Taser C2 also can be used as a stun gun for direct contact. With the Taser C2 it is hard to go wrong.

Tasers and stun guns are legal to carry in most all United States and do not require a license or permit to own or carry.

Though most senior citizens never imagine being the victim of a crime, they are particularly vulnerable. It is best to be prepared than not and the Taser C2 is an effective non-lethal means of self defense that is easy to use and convenient to carry.
